Sheung Wan
After three years of pandemic, this summer, onebite’s placemaking experiment Project House is making a comeback! We will be moving into the familiar Sheung Wan neighbourhood at 1 Queen’s Road West for six weeks, creating a brand new community space with over 30 community partners.
With Project House @1QRW, how can we spark new imaginations of communtiy life?
Historical Building as a Launchpad
As usual, Project House makes use of temporarily vacant retail space provided by thoughtful property owners. We are fortunate to have Lion Rock Heritage Foundation the landlord lending the gorgeous Grade 3 historic building @1 Queen’s Road West. Formerly known as “Yau Kee Hop" (a roast meat business) and built before the 1920s, this pre-war tonglau serves as a rare witness to the history of this community, but also grants us an opportunity to connect the profound historical background laid within the community
Reimganing Social Services
Project House @1QW partners intensively with Caritas Community Centre - Caine Road and other service units, with the hope to spark imaginations of community services. If we change the patterns and locations of traditional services, perhaps we can reach out to new kaifongs, partners, and brainstorm new service ideas?
Possibilities of Post-Pandemic Community Spaces
Project House @1QRW envisions a community living room where everyone can rest safely, comfortably take a lunch break, and enjoy a cool breathing space during the summer. We will also run a series of events and services with our collaborators to meet the needs and interests of different kafongs, and explore the possibility of street-level retail space as a new type of community space ("third place").
Taking the Pulse of the Community
Over the past few years, we have experienced countless unexpected changes, and have all come out different walking through these struggles, so have the needs of the community. In addition to the possibilities and imaginations, a daily space on the street-level is best suited to understand the real needs of the community, allowing organisations passionate about community work to re-examine the community and understand what our kaifongs truly need after the pandemic to provide better solutions.
A move-in will never be possible without a housewarming party! Likewise, Project House has a wish list for our new move.
Volunteers recruitment: Starting from July 29th, our community living room will be open from 10 am to 9 pm every Monday to Saturday, and we need volunteers to be on duty as "living room manager"! Click here to apply!
Donations: We are fortunate to have the property owner lend us the space for free, and local shops lend us equipment. However, we still rely on everyone's support to turn the space into a comfortable community living room as quickly as possible. There are several new community projects that require the collective effort of everyone to raise project costs -
Picture Book Workshop: Artist Maoshan Connie has prepared a series workshop that uses picture books as a medium, and also aims to provide caregivers with a short break in both space and time.
Community breathing space: Over five consecutive weeks, instructor Maggie Lin will lead kaifongs in mindfulness exercises on different themes.
