在日本，每年都有成千上萬人消失得無影無蹤，這些人被稱作蒸發者。他們有的為了躲避債務，有的為了逃離保護欲過強的父母，還有的為了從麻煩的戀愛關係中脫身。他們在「夜間搬家公司」的幫助下，跳出不斷下沉的現狀，到沒有人認識自己的地方開始新的生活。影片跟隨這些失蹤者和提供協助的公司，旁觀他們的蒸發，探索陷入絕境的人們內心的矛盾與衝突，揭露日本社會高壓環境下的問題。
