Once a “Pawn” a Time: Storytelling Sessions (Hong Kong Lo Mei)

We regularly collaborate with speakers from diverse backgrounds—including former employees of Chun On Pawn Shop, historical experts, shop owners,  residents and cultural practitioners—to share about the history and evolution of Chun On Pawn Shop, pawnbroking culture, and Wan Chai from multiple angles. Held within the authentic, historic walls of Chun On Pawn Shop, these sessions go far beyond "listening to stories", fostering a deeper connection to the past while bringing the community closer together.

【Storytelling Sessions: The Eccentric Pre-War Architecture: Chun On Pawn Shop | Hong Kong Lomei】

Standing at 91 Wan Chai Road, the "Chun On Pawn Shop" possesses a modern appearance. It features bizarrely narrow balconies with thick-framed aluminium windows, plain external walls adorned with charming four-lobed, heart-shaped glazed mosaic tiles, and an ancient gabled roof paired with brand-new aluminium panels. However, this building was actually completed in 1924, and its exterior differs completely from the typical pre-war tenement buildings (Tong Lau), which were usually characterised by gigantic verandahs. To truly appreciate the architectural characteristics of Chun On Pawn Shop, it is best to examine it through the historical context of Wan Chai.

The site transformed from a grocery store selling daily necessities into a pawn shop under Mr. Li Yau-chuen, the renowned "King of Pawn Shops." It subsequently changed hands during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, eventually becoming the present-day Chun On Pawn Shop. In the 1960s, it was taken over by another pawn industry tycoon, Mr. Lo Shiu-tong, who further expanded its legacy. We are delighted to share the captivating stories behind this journey.
